Elementary School Newsletter - September 5th, 2019

Dear parents and students,

The first week of school is almost over. It was our pleasure to welcome our students back to school and see how they grew over the summer. We would like to extend a special welcome to the students and families who are new to our school this year, and we are looking forward to an exciting, productive and successful school year.

Swimming

Please be advised that only grades 5, 6 and 7 students have swimming class on Friday, September 13th at 2:30. We will be back to school at 4:30pm.

Students are reminded to bring their swimming equipment: Swim-wear, towel, swimming cap (optional), goggles, hairbrush, flip flops or poolside shoes.

The rest of the groups will be scheduled for the following weeks.

Trip to Chudleigh’s Farm – Grades 1-2

Please be reminded that on Friday, September 13th grades 1-2 are having a trip to Chudleigh’s Farm. Please don’t forget to wear the UMCA sweatshirt/t-shirt, bring a water bottle and a snack (no need to bring lunch. The kids will be back to school for lunch).

Lunch

Please note that this year lunch will be served all week-days, Friday included. Therefore, there’s no need to send lunch or arrange lunch for Friday as it will be served. Snacks will be served on Fridays as well.

Curriculum Night

Please be informed that Curriculum Night for Grade 1 and new students parents is on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:00 pm. Important information will be given along this meeting such as daily routine activities, website information, evaluations, lunchtime rules, outdoors activities, field trips, and general information provided by your child's teachers.

 Logging In

We kindly ask for your assistance to ensure that your child is able to log in to the school website (www.umca.ca). It is extremely important that all students know how to log in independently using same information as their parents.

Please spend time with your child this weekend navigating the UMCA website and looking at all of its features. Starting next week, each student will be asked one at a time to log in independently. We are here to assist you through this process. Please get into the habit of checking the website every week as teachers constantly update their messages.

How to log in

In the page of the website, click on the tab “Student Portal” at the top right corner.

*The User Name is the first initial followed by your last name. All letters are lower case (for example: Dan Smith's user name will be: d_smith).

*The temporary password is: Changeme#123

*You will then be prompted to change your password.

*If you are not a new student, and haven’t logged in yet, your user name is the same as last year, but your temporary password is Changeme#123

Once you are logged in, you can read course information, view grades and communicate with teachers.

If you are facing any difficulties please contact Ms. Ariela and she will be more than happy to assist you.

Yesterday, students received their UMCA’s sport t-shirt. Please write your child’s name on as they tend to lose it very often. You must bring your sport's outfit every day (the UMCA t-shirt, sport shoes, and sweatpants/comfortable pants for work out).

Each child must bring his/hers own water bottle (plastic, not glass) filled with fresh water every day. The bottles will be re-filled in the school if needed. Please label your child’s water bottle.

At UMCA we believe that outdoor activity is as important as academic achievements. Therefore, weather permitted, we plan outdoor time every day to breath fresh air and enjoy recess time outside. Please dress up your child according to the weather (in summer: a hat, sun screen, in the winter: a hat, gloves, winter jacket, boots, scarf, etc.).

Please don't bring any electronic games to school, cell phones or electronic games will be confiscated if found. Please make sure your child is not bringing to school any Pokémon cards and other games.

Classes end at 5:00pm. School closes at 6:30pm. Please come to pick up your child only after classes end. We would like to ask you to be punctual and bring your child to school before classes start. Students who are late interrupt the lesson and distract the other students. Please be on time.

Permission to leave school for grade 7

Please be advised that grade 7 students have the privilege of leaving the school during breaks and after the official school day ends (5:00 pm).  Parents must sign and return the “letter of Consent to Leave School” which can be found in the office, if they want to allow their child to leave the school premises.

Students must bring to school the signed form by Friday, September 13th.

If you have any question please contact Mrs. Suzana Pinsky.

Extra-Curricular Activities

UMCA is happy to announce that this year we will continue with our extra curricular activities throughout the school year. It is important for your child to be very diverse in their interests. These activities allow them to explore various interests that they may have, and can also work to build professional skills that a classroom alone cannot always foster. Extra-curriculars are not solely about imparting stronger professional skills and supplementing education. These programs are also fun and offer students the opportunity to spend time with others of similar interests. Students can meet friends from different social groups.
