Elementary School Student Policy

1. Introduction

UMCA Rich Tree Academy is committed to build a strong partnership between home and school to ensure that students achieve high academic standards and personal growth.

The Academy provides a high-quality curriculum, effective instruction, and a supportive learning environment aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education requirements.

2. Attendance and Punctuality

2.1 Attendance Expectations

1. Classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.
2. 0–10 minutes late = Recorded as Late.
3. More than 10 minutes late = Recorded as Absent.
4. Every three (3) lates will be recorded as one (1) absence.
5. Parents/guardians must report all absences to the school office on the same day.
6. Medical absences require either a doctor’s note or written notice from the parent/guardian submitted in the morning.
7. 10–14 absences: Parent/guardian notification.
8. More than 15 absences: Student’s course mark will be at risk.

2.2 Responsibilities Regarding Attendance

9. Students must attend all scheduled classes unless excused for medical or urgent circumstances.
10. Non-emergency absences must be requested at least one week in advance.
11. Parents/guardians must inform school if they will miss class due to extracurricular activities or travel.
12. Students are responsible for obtaining and completing all missed work.
13. Teachers are not obligated to provide additional make-up lessons.

3. Homework, Tests, and Assignments

14. All assignments must be submitted on time.
15. Tests receiving low marks may not be rewritten.
16. If a student misses a test, it may be rewritten within five (5) business days of the original test date.
17. After this period, a mark of zero (0) will be assigned.

4. Academic Expectations and Integrity

4.1 Academic Probation

18. Students who are failing or at risk of failing a course will be placed on academic probation.
19. Students must attend scheduled extra-help sessions.
20. Students must participate in after-school tutoring if required.
21. Students must demonstrate improved effort, participation, and academic responsibility.

5. Student Conduct and Responsibilities

22. Follow all rules outlined in the UMCA Rich Tree Academy Policies.
23. Demonstrate respect toward staff, peers, and school property.
24. Bring all required materials to class daily.
25. Actively participate in learning by completing assigned tasks and asking questions.
26. Seek assistance when needed.
27. Demonstrate responsible online behaviour and protect personal information.
28. Use school devices strictly for educational purposes.
29. Cell phones for grades 6 – 8 may be used only during lunch or after school hours unless otherwise directed by a teacher.

5.1 Technology Use Policy

30. School-issued devices are for academic purposes only.
31. Students must not share personal information online.
32. Unauthorized access, misuse, or inappropriate online activity may result in disciplinary action.

5.2 Classroom Conduct

33. Students must always demonstrate respectful behavior toward teachers and classmates.
34. Disruptive behavior will negatively affect participation marks and may result in disciplinary action.

6. Communication

35. The Academy communicates via email, school newsletters, and Schoology (integrated with Office 365).
36. Students will receive individual login credentials.
37. Any login or access issues must be reported immediately.
38. Students are responsible for checking Schoology regularly for updates, assignments, and announcements.
