UMCA Elementary School Newsletter – September 17th, 2020

Curriculum Night for Grade 1 and New Students

Please note, that on Tuesday, October 6th we will have a curriculum night for the Grade 1 and new students’ parents. We are looking forward to seeing you! Due to COVID-19 we will not be able to meet in person, but we will be happy to invite you to a virtual zoom meeting. Link to the meeting and the time will be sent closer to the date.

Yom Kippur – School is closed

Please note that on Monday, September 28th the school will be closed due to the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.

Arriving to School on Time

Classes at UMCA start at 9:00 am. We ask all students to arrive on time (in between 8:00 am to 8:45 am). Arriving late to a class interrupts the lesson, distract the students and the teacher’s attention, not to mention the information the student missed by being late. Students who arrive late will have to wait until the class ends and will not be allowed in the class.

Phones and Electronic Devices

This is a reminder that cell phones are not allowed for students grades 1-6. Students grades 7 and up are allowed cell phones only during recess and once classes end at 5:00 pm. Computers are allowed only during classes that require the use of a computer (not during lunch or recess). We will confiscate devices that are used not according to the rules.

Sending Sick Kids to School

With the change in weather, we also experience an increase in cold symptoms. For safety’s sake, and especially during the pandemic, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. You must report a student’s absence for every day that he misses school. The student’s absence form can be found on our website: umca.ca, at the top bar. If a student can’t arrive on time due to a doctor’s appointment or any other reason, you must report that as well on the “Student Absence” form. We kindly ask you not to send emails or text messages, but to use the form. Please be reminded that before arriving at school you need to fill up the COVID-19 Screening Form, which is on our website, front page.

Pencil Case and Writing Material

Please make sure your child is arriving to class with a pencil case and writing materials such as sharpened pencils, eraser and sharpener. Some kids come with no pencils or ones that need sharpening, and valuable lesson time is wasted. Make sure that you label your child’s pencil case.

Extra Clothes

We kindly ask all parents of grades 1 and 2 students to send with their child a labelled zip log bag with extra socks, t-shirt, pants and underwear. Our young students might still have their clothes get wet and it’s important they have clothes to change to and not stay wet.

No Gum in School

This is a reminder that no gum is allowed in school.

The JCC is a community and lifestyle. We may be physically distancing, but we are proud to be socially connecting. We want to invite you on a new journey to join us as we start a new chapter. We are opening our virtual doors so our community can continue to stay together, workout together, learn together and create together. Your JCC has always been there for you, and your JCC will continue to be here for you now.

Please take a moment to view our video on the safety protocols we have in place.

We are looking forward to having you part of our family.
