At our UMCA Language Department, we believe that mastering languages is the key to unlocking the world. Through English, French, and Russian, our students explore diverse cultures and develop critical thinking and communication skills that last a lifetime.

English, Grade 9, Academic
This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, plays, short stories, and poems. They will develop skills in writing, oral communication, and media literacy while learning to express ideas clearly and effectively.
Prerequisite: None

ENG2D
English, Grade 10, Academic
This course extends students’ skills in reading, writing, oral communication, and media analysis. Students will analyze a variety of literary texts, including poetry, fiction, drama, and non-fiction. They will produce written work using the writing process and will focus on developing a clear voice and style.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 9, Academic or Applied

ENG3U
English, Grade 11, University Preparation
This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyze challenging texts from various periods, genres, and cultures; write analytical and argumentative essays; and apply language conventions accurately.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 10, Academic

ENG4U
English, Grade 12, University Preparation
This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills essential for success in university and beyond. Students will analyze a range of complex texts and write persuasive and critical essays. The course focuses on developing a mature writing style and a deep understanding of how language shapes meaning.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparation

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESLAO
English as a Second Language, Level 1 (Open)
This course builds a foundation in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will develop basic vocabulary and communication skills for everyday and academic situations. The course emphasizes language use in practical contexts and helps students adapt to a new school environment.
Prerequisite: None

ESLBO
English as a Second Language, Level 2 (Open)
This course extends students’ ability to communicate in English and introduces more complex vocabulary and grammar. Students will read simple texts, write short paragraphs, and engage in everyday conversations to strengthen their fluency and comprehension.
Prerequisite: ESL Level 1 or equivalent

ESLCO
English as a Second Language, Level 3 (Open)
This course develops students’ skills in speaking, reading, and writing more confidently and accurately. Students will read a variety of adapted and authentic texts and produce longer written assignments. Emphasis is placed on academic vocabulary and sentence structure.
Prerequisite: ESL Level 2 or equivalent

ESLDO
English as a Second Language, Level 4 (Open)
This course prepares students for participation in mainstream English courses. Students will improve reading comprehension, write multi-paragraph compositions, and engage in extended discussions on academic and social topics.
Prerequisite: ESL Level 3 or equivalent

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course

OLC4O
Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, Grade 12, Open
This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills needed to meet the reading and writing requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Graduation Requirement. Students will analyze informational, narrative, and graphic texts and create various written forms.
Prerequisite: The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) not yet completed successfully, or principal’s recommendation

Studies in Literature

ETS4U
Studies in Literature, Grade 12, University Preparation
This course is intended for students who are passionate about reading, analyzing, and writing about literature. Students will explore a variety of genres — including novels, drama, poetry, and short fiction — from different periods and cultures. They will develop strong critical thinking, essay-writing, and interpretive skills through literary analysis and discussion.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparation

French as a Second Language

FSF1D
Core French, Grade 9, Academic
This course emphasizes the development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills in French. Students will build on their previous knowledge of French to increase their vocabulary and improve grammar, pronunciation, and comprehension. Through reading, listening, and conversation, students will explore francophone cultures and develop confidence in using French in real-life situations.
Prerequisite: Minimum of 600 hours of elementary Core French instruction, or equivalent

International Languages

LRBBD
International Languages – Russian, Level 1, Academic
This course introduces students to the Russian language and culture. Students will develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, focusing on effective communication in everyday contexts. They will learn fundamental grammar structures, pronunciation, and vocabulary while exploring aspects of Russian traditions, history, and contemporary life.
